Confirmed: MPS has signed with the Oilers
Although prematurely speculated by me and Jasminder a couple weeks ago, the Oilers have come through on the rumored signing of prospect Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson almost a year after he was picked 10th overall in the 2009 draft.
After a successful year in which he starred with Timra of the SEL, Sweden in the WJHC, and Sweden in the WHC, Magnus had himself suggested he may be NHL-ready - and he followed through by signing a 3-year entry-level contract with the Oilers, terms of which have been undisclosed. This sets up for one of the most exciting training camps in years, where new faces Chris VandeVelde, Jeff Petry, Teemu Hartikainen, Linus Omark, and now Paajarvi will be making their Oiler debuts, in addition to one of Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin.
As for his chances to make the big club, I think Paajarvi boosted his prospects by announcing he was comfortable playing on either wing, which ends much of the speculation that he would be automatically demoted if the Oilers pick Hall because he'd be playing bottom-6 minutes. This has been a personal favorite prospect of us at ETG, and now that he's been signed, we can all relax and look forward to the draft.
PS. In an interview conducted with the Team1260 moments after the signing was announced, MPS confirmed that teammate Anton Lander had in fact extended his contract with Timra for the upcoming season. The 2009 2nd rounder had apparently been approached by Tambellini, but had cited a lack of NHL-preparedness as his reason for staying. I fully support the decision, and wish him well as he develops into the strong 2-way center he has been projected to become.
